This airshow is held every year on September. This airshow displays a large number of aircrafts and acrobatics; however, the star of this airshow is the racing. The Reno Air Races, officially known as the National Championship Air Races, take place at Reno Stead Airport in Nevada.
The Ultimate Test of Speed and Skill
Since 1964, this event has been the proving ground for some of the fastest piston-engine aircraft in the world. Modified P-51 Mustangs, Sea Furies, and Yak fighters compete in classes based on engine size and modification level. The Unlimited Class sees these machines reach speeds over 400mph at altitudes sometimes below 50 feet.
At 400mph just feet above the desert floor, there is no room for error. The Reno Air Races are where engineering, courage, and raw speed collide.
The race course is an oval pylon course approximately 8 miles in length. Pilots navigate around six specially designed pylons, with the crowd watching from a nearby hillside. The sheer speed and proximity of the aircraft to each other creates an intensity unmatched by any other airshow format.
Safety has always been paramount, with continuous improvements to the course design and spectator areas. Despite the inherent risks of high-speed low-altitude racing, the event maintains an exemplary safety record thanks to rigorous pilot qualification and aircraft inspection standards.
