RAF Waddington Air Show Supports Past, Present and Future Personnel
16th December 2014
The RAF Waddington Air Show had yet another immensely successful year attracting in excess of 135,000 visitors over the 2 days of the 2014 Show and raising £260,000 for Service and local charities.
The organisers are thrilled to announce that with 85% of the profits split between the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund (RAFBF), the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA), Royal Air Force Charitable Trust and the RAF Museum, each good cause will receive a huge £55,250 donation. The first two charities provide practical and emotional support to all members of the RAF past and present who are in need. The two new recipient charities are closely entwined in the RAF Family. The Royal Air Force Charitable Trust exists to promote the Royal Air Force, to support its people and to encourage air mindedness amongst the Youth through education; while the RAF Museum ensures that the Royal Air Force’s story endures and enriches future generations. On top of this the local community will benefit from a £39,000 donation to Station Charities. The RAF Waddington Air Show has raised a staggering £3.5 million over its 20 years.
Group Captain Richard Barrow, Station Commander, RAF Waddington says: “Given the operational commitments of RAF Waddington, further complicated by the runway refurbishment, everyone at RAF Waddington shares a massive sense of achievement and pride. To put on such a spectacular show takes a lot of commitment, from the station personnel, the local community and partner organisations, who all support the Air Show in a myriad of ways. The Air Show is undoubtedly a unique opportunity to showcase the people and capability of the Royal Air Force; moreover, the charitable donations make a real difference to both the Service and local communities.
Looking ahead to 2015, it is very much regretted that because of essential work due to be undertaken to refurbish the runway at RAF Waddington, the Station will be unable to put on an Air Show next year (2015)
The RAF has decided to complete a full review of its air show commitments and has asked RAF Charitable Trust Enterprises to contribute to the review, the results of which will be announced in due course.”
The thrills of this year’s Air Show can be relived via the official 2014 DVD which also includes in depth features about the Royal Air Force and the capabilities stationed at RAF Waddington. Lincoln MP Karl McCartney campaigns for the return of the Air Show
24th October 2014
Lincoln MP Karl McCartney has made the case for the return of the Waddington Air Show to Defence Minister Mark Francois MP when he visited Waddington village on Wednesday, October 22. After announcing the cancellation of the 2015 show, due to ongoing £35 million runway works, the Ministry of Defence announced a full review of all of its air show commitments. In response, a petition was set up arguing the event’s £12 million segment in the Lincolnshire economy. It now has over 4,000 signatures. Lincoln MP Karl McCartney is campaigning for the show’s return. He said: “After the 2015 air show was cancelled, we were given no firm commitment that it was going to ever happen again. “In response I have been hassling my fellow colleagues who are ministers in the Ministry of Defence. “There is no doubt that the RAF Waddington International Air Show is an event that is firmly entrenched in Lincolnshire’s heart." "It is the largest of all RAF air shows, and is regularly attended by over 140,000 visitors. “It is also important for us to ensure that the Air Show takes place at Waddington in 2017 ahead of what will be the large and year-long celebrations of the RAF’s existence in 2018. “I was greatly encouraged by the Defence Secretary’s answer to my Parliamentary Question on the Floor of the House of Commons.” Defence Minister Mark Francois MP explained the MOD’s current position on air shows: “We are reviewing all of our air shows, not just Waddington. I can’t pre-empt the outcome of the review because it isn’t complete yet. “Partly because we have been so busy with a number operations that we’ve undertaken, we have had to look at the number of shows that we can support in the future. “It’s the cost but partly time as well in terms of personnel. “The £35 million rebuild of the runway should be finished by Christmas next year. It’s a big investment by the MOD for the long-term future of Waddington. “I’m very pro air shows, and I think it’s important that tax payers see what they are getting for their money in terms of defence.” “When Defence Secretary, Michael Fallon, responded to questions from MPs on Monday, he said ‘It will be for the review of air shows early next year to decide where they could be supported, but I very much hope that the Waddington Air Show is able to return in 2016.”

Message from the Station Commander RAF Waddington
9th July 2014
The RAF Waddington International Air Show is a unique opportunity for the Station to engage with our visitors to showcase the work, people and capability of the RAF and its partner organisations. I am immensely proud of the effort Station personnel have contribute to this year’s Air Show both in the months leading up to the event and on the day. It is very much regretted that due to essential work due to be undertaken to refurbish the runway at RAF Waddington, the Station will be unable to put on an Air Show next year (2015). Due to this work and the movement of the RAF from our other air show location (RAF Leuchars in Scotland), the RAF has decided to complete a full review of its air show commitments; the results of the review will be announced in due course.
Thank you for your support.

A Sky High Success
8th July 2014
RAF Waddington International Air Show has proved to be a huge success. The stunning flying displays have attracted more than 135,000 visitors over the two days, all intent on having a fantastic day out at the RAF Waddington Air Show.
This year’s themes were the 50th Display Season for the Red Arrows, 65 years of NATO and ISTAR 14. To commemorate the D Day landings, RAF’s Typhoon Force had applied invasion markings to one of its FGR4’s to match those on the spitfire flown by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. To the delight of the spectators the two aircraft then flew together at the end of the Battle of Memorial Flight Display. ISTAR 14 showcased the information that is vital to the force commander on the battlefield. To supply this resource, the RAF operates a variety of aircraft equipped with world-leading reconnaissance systems. With these themes in mind it was particularly fitting that the Waddington-based E-3D Sentry of 8 Squadron, the Rivet Joint from 51 Squadron and the Sentinel from 5 Squadron provided the curtain-raiser to both days of this year’s spectacular air show.
With its unique and eye-catching flying display the Dutch Hunter won first prize for the most polished display demonstrating the power and manoeuvrability of the aircraft followed by the the GrobTutor. In the Static category the Slovak L39 won the first prize followed by the Italian KC767.
Mr Paul Sall, Air Show director said: “RAF Waddington has welcomed more than 135,000 visitors over the weekend, it has once again been an exciting opportunity for all members of the family to view tremendous flying displays and a wide variety of ground exhibits showcasing the work of the RAF and its partner organisations. A truly international flavour with participation from many different countries. I hope our visitors had a great day out at the Royal Air Force’s premier Airshow.”

Mighty Viggen Returns
6th June 2013
If you say Historic SAABs, you mind will probably turn to the 4 wheeled variety first and maybe aeroplanes second. The minds of the organisers of this years RAF Waddington International airshow have been fixed firmly on the historic aircraft variety and after many months of negotiation and planning are delighted to announce the Swedish Air Force Historic Flights debut at the show.
This year will see, for the very first time, the flight fly their SK60 , Tunan and the mighty SAAB JA37 Viggen in the skies above Waddington and UK mainland. The Viggen first took to the skies on the 27th March 1967, powered by a Volvo RM8B Turbofan engine, the aircraft is capable of reaching speeds of upto Mach 2.1, twice the speed of sound. The Viggen was Sweden’s first line of defence during the cold war period carrying out both Strike, Air Defence and reconnaissance missions, operating from both fixed airfields and a unique system of deployed bases throughout Sweden, which doubled as public roads. The SwAFHF Viggen was withdrawn from service in 2007 and after 5 years of restoration took to the skies again in March 2012, wearing the colour scheme of the earliest examples.
The Viggen will be joined by some of SAABs other Jet aircraft including the SK60 used as a training and Light Attack aircraft, which is still in service with the Swedish Air Force and the Austrian Air Force. The trio will be completed by the Saab 29 Tunnan, an aircraft with its history rooted in the earliest days of jet powered flight. The Tunnan first flew in 1948, being designed from a mix of UK, German and US technology , due to its odd shape became known as the ‘flying barrel’.
The Swedish Air Force Historic flight operate a range of aircraft, keeping Swedish aviation history alive across Europe. With a strong presence at this years show the historic lines of Swedish aviation can be compared with their modern day equivalents with representation of the the Viggens successor in the guise of the hugely successful JAS 39C Gripen from the Czech Air Force and a range of SAAB ISTAR aircraft including the SAAB 2000 Swordfish and SAAB 340 AEW ‘Erieye’ on the ground.

15th,16th &17th May 2013
May is a very busy month for commemorating one of the most famous events in Lincolnshire’s rich aviation heritage, the 16th of May will be the 70th anniversary of the DamBusters Raid, mounted from RAF Scampton just north of the City of Lincoln.
On 15th May Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire are holding a Gala Charity showing of the original 1955 black and white ‘DamBusters’ film at the Kinema in the Woods, Woodhall Spa. The cinema is one of the oldest in the country and the film was made primarily on location in Lincolnshire. The event will be followed by a reception at the Petwood Hotel, which was the officers mess for the DamBusters Squadron following the move to Woodhall Spa. The whole evening is completely sold out.
The RAF will be holding its own tribute to Guy Gibson and the airmen of 617 Squadron with a Sunset Ceremony at RAF Scampton on 16th May which will probably be broadcast live by the BBC.
Then on Friday 17th May Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire has organised a service of Commemoration in Lincoln Cathedral. This event is being attended by people from all over the United Kingdom and from overseas. So popular is this event that all of the tickets have been taken up. If you are visiting Lincoln that afternoon do look out for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Lancaster which will fly in tribute over the Cathedral after the service.
All in all it will be a busy week in Lincolnshire for aviation heritage
Hunter XE620 8Sqn gate guard
11th April 2013
The Hunter has finally arrived outside No. 8 Squadron today. The Joint Aircraft Recovery and Transport Squadron (JARTS) dismantled and loaded the Hunter yesterday at RAF Barkston Heath in preparation for its delivery to the Squadron this morning. The JARTS team expects to have the Hunter fully installed as the new 8 Squadron gate guard by early evening today. Taking longer to arrive than expected is a result of the complexities of moving the old 23 Squadron Phantom gate guard, and preparing the site ready for the Hunter. It was great to see Barry Dobson, who has now left the RAF and was the driving force behind this project, there to witness the installation. The plan to complete the memorial and pathway around the Hunter can now begin.
